Song of David

The shepherd boy began to play his harp with strings sublime
His callused hand brought forth a song that sings throughout all time
And like a meadow spring that flows he sang his song on high
And Heaven bound his words of thanks rose up to the sky

This shepherd boy so pure in heart, anointed by God’s word
Whose Spirit came and rested there as David’s heart was stirred
His harp strings soothed away the wrath that God had sent to Saul
The vibrant strings sent evil out and Saul was left in awe

Ch

The Prophet-Priest anointed him while Saul still ruled the land
(The) Spirit of the Lord came down, gave Israel to his hand
(This) shepherd boy will be a King, Ruling Israel one day
All will give him praise he’ll lead the way

Now we feel the winds of war rush in to Ellah’s land
A giant of a man stands there to challenge Israel’s hand
This shepherd boy armed with a sling he faced him all alone
And David slew Goliath there, he cast his river stone

A thousand men at his command, this warrior goes to war
And at his side God’s Spirit walked, his battles fought in gore
Wherever David’s men were sent they met with great success
The women danced in the street sang songs that David’s blessed

Ch

A thousand slain by Saul’s own hand, but David slew much more
Angered fueled against God’s man, This warrior men adored
The love he earned for his success, brought anger to King Saul
A warning from the King’s own son, And David left his hall

Israel’s king he lives in fear of a humble shepherd boy
A warrior true to King and land, who sought out only joy
And then the news “The King is Dead”, his army’s put to route
The mighty killed in battle fell, their weapons lie about

Ch

And David mourned his fallen King, his friends in battle spent
The fallen men, dead by the sword, he sang war’s dark lament
Then sent to Hebron by the Lord, anointed as their King
Began to heal up Israel’s wounds, tho still she felt wars sting

Saul’s sons rose against the man, who loved his land so dear
These wicked men killed righteous souls with lance and sword and spear
He finally brought an end to war and David sang his song
United land of Israel, God’s chosen one stands strong!

Ch

The Prophet-Priest anointed him while Saul still ruled the land
(The) Spirit of the Lord came down, gave Israel to his hand
(This) shepherd boy is now a King, Ruling Israel today
All will give him praise God leads the way

Alternate verses:

Smallest son in my father’s house, a shepherd boy am I
I made a harp with my own hands, Sang songs to God on high
He alone hears the songs I sing, and He who sees my toil
He who sent His messenger to anoint my head with oil

Lyrics

Song of David – Shepherd Musician

A shepherd boy in Jesse’s house, whose sheep in meadows graze
He made a harp with his own hands, He longed to sing God’s praise
The shepherd boy began to play his harp with strings sublime
His callused hand brought forth a song that sings throughout all time

And like a meadow spring that flows he sang his song on high
And Heaven bound his words of thanks rose up to the sky
This shepherd boy so pure in heart, his faith lay in God’s word
Whose Spirit came and rested there as David’s heart was stirred

Ch
The Prophet-Priest anointed him while Saul still ruled the land
(The) Spirit of the Lord came down, gave Israel to his hand
(This) shepherd boy will be a King, Ruling Israel one day
All will give him praise he’ll lead the way

The prophet Samuel came one day, brought David to the King
His gift with harp and words of praise for Saul he would sing
Harp strings soothed away the wrath that God had sent to Saul
Vibrant strings sent evil out - Saul was left in awe

Whenever spirits would descend and trouble King Saul’s soul
The court would send for Jess’s son - his music to console
David stayed and played his harp whose strings would sooth the heart
And when the king was resting sound, David would depart
