The Road to Emmaus
Two men were walking on the road from Jerusalem
On their way to Emmaus and their friends
They talked about the prophet who had been crucified
And how they say he was taken from the tomb
While they were talking a stranger joined with them
And He listened to the story that they told
He heard about the prophet a mighty man of word and deed
And all the things they said that he had done
They talked about the night on the hill in Gethsemane
Betrayed by his friend while he prayed
Given to the Chief priest who had him crucified!
On Golgotha Mountain where he died
Bridge
Where have you gone? What have they done to you?
We thought you came to save us we didn’t know
Now you lay inside a tomb sealed behind a stone
And we who loved you dearly are all alone
When they spoke of Mary who at the mornings dawn
Went down to the grave to tend her son
But the tomb was empty the stone was rolled away
Inside there was no body she was alone
Then the stranger said “Foolish men, can you not believe?”
Listen to what the prophets have foretold?
And He told them of the prophets from the olden days
how the things they’d said had to come to pass
So they came to Emmaus, their journey at an end
They begged the stranger to join their evening meal
He broke the bread and blessed the wine when their eyes had finally seen
Their beloved master had vanished from their sight
Where have you gone? What have they done to you?
We thought you came to save us we didn’t know
The Messiah has come at last and He’s freed us from our chains
Now our hearts are longing for His return - where have you gone
